Planned Parenthood and its supporters often deflect criticism of the organization by saying things like, “it’s about so much more than abortion!” A closer look at the leadership of Planned Parenthood Association of Utah (PPAU), however, reveals a stronger tie to abortion than they care to let on. Here’s how:
Annabel Sheinberg
Annabel Scheinberg is the Education Director at PPAU. She coordinates sex education programs in a number of different schools in the state, mainly located in the Salt Lake & Park City areas. Some past and present examples of these are:
- Teen Outreach Program” (TOP®) an afterschool teen pregnancy prevention program
- In.Clued a workshop for LGBT youth focusing on sexual confidence and health needs
- Teen Council a peer-led sex education program for 10th-12th graders (here's an interview with Annabel about the program)
- Teen Success a weekly support group for pregnant and parenting teens (participants must sign a form saying they understand they will be "dropped from the group" if they don't maintain their current family size)
- Growing Up Comes First- a maturation program for elementary-aged children ages 9-12 (parents rightfully complained because the video shows an animated erect penis and ejaculation)
Dr. David Turok
Dr. David Turok is the abortionist at Planned Parenthood Metro (which does abortions up to 22 weeks). He does both D&C (first trimester) and D&E (second trimester) procedures. He recently presented at the University of Utah’s Symposium, "Medical and Legal Aspects of Targeted Regulation of Abortion Providers (TRAP) Laws," a gathering of pro-choice doctors, leaders, and supporters in order to educate participants how to fight back against pro-life legislation. David has "trained dozens of Utah physicians in abortion[s]" (source).
Annabel & David are married.
Why does this matter? Because there's a tremendous conflict of interest.
Cash in the Bank
The cheapest abortion a Utah woman can get at Planned Parenthood is $450, with prices rising to over $1,000 at later gestational ages (Women can sometimes get a $100 discount from the Justice Fund). If a woman doesn’t get an abortion, PPAU loses that opportunity to grow their bottom line.
Annabel claims their programs are about preventing unintended pregnancies, and yet every abortion that her husband performs is money made, which benefits both PPAU and her personally.
In 2013, Annabel coordinated a showing of “After Tiller” a documentary showing the lives of four doctors who perform abortions throughout all 9 months of pregnancy (this was originally promoted by the SLC Feminist website, which is now defunct, so here is a screenshot of the description). Clearly the “fight to protect reproductive rights” (even if it means aborting babies up to the day of birth) matters to her; it’s not hard to understand why.
"Their business model is simple"
Abby Johnson, a former Texas Planned Parenthood manager turned pro-life advocate has stated that PP seeks to create a relationship with young people so they can get them hooked on sex, and ultimately, sell them an abortion. “Everything they do is simply leading back to abortion” Johnson wrote on her official Facebook page on May 3, 2017. “Their business model is simple. Sell abortions. Increase revenue. Don't be fooled by the smoke and mirrors.”
The marriage of Sheinberg and Turok is symbolic of the “marriage” of Planned Parenthood and abortion; you simply can’t have one without the other.
