Monday night of May 2, 2022, Politico first broke the news about a Supreme Court opinion leak on perhaps the most controversial case in decades, Dobbs v. Jackson.
Amidst this shocking news, Taylor brings us a message of clarification, hope, and warning.
Message from the President
Well, it does indeed look like Roe v Wade may not see its 50th birthday.
If you happen to have missed all the excitement last night, the majority Supreme Court opinion in the Dobbs 15-week abortion ban case was leaked.
The good news is it appears that the majority of the Court is in favor of returning abortion law back to the states where it belongs.
The bad news is that years of sacred precedence was broken last night, and the highly honored secrecy of the Supreme Court was violated.
We can only guess that the person that leaked this news was hoping that public reaction may sway one of these Supreme Court justices and change the intended ruling.
Essential context
At Pro-Life Utah, we've been following the Dobbs case closely in great anticipation, but in case you have forgotten, Mississippi's 15-week abortion ban was heard by the Supreme Court in December.
We were expecting a ruling in June.
During the oral arguments, it appeared that many justices believed Row was wrongly decided and that abortion law should go back to the states. Indeed, that appears to be the majority opinion of the Supreme Court.
As Utahns
What does this mean for Utah? As you recall, Utah has a “Life at Conception” trigger bill that will go into effect if Roe v Wade is overturned. What a joyous day that will be for Utah!
A Plea for Prayer
But we have to temper our excitement with the knowledge that this was a leak intended to do damage. The Supreme Court could confirm this opinion in the next few days, or they could take another 2 months to hand down the ruling.
2 months is a long time to sway the votes of justices who feel threatened and pressured. Please pray for these brave Supreme Court justices.
