Utah parents deserve to know that the sex education their children receive in public schools is medically accurate, age-appropriate, and free from ideological or political agendas. Yet, abortion providers like Planned Parenthood are actively seeking to influence young minds, not just within the classroom, but also through after-school programs where they push extreme and misleading narratives about gender, sexuality, and reproductive health. HB 233 is a crucial bill that will ensure organizations that profit from abortion are not placed in a position to influence Utah’s students.
Planned Parenthood’s After-School Programs: A Window into Their Agenda
Planned Parenthood is not simply offering neutral, fact-based education. Their after-school programs provide a clear insight into the kind of information they promote when given access to young students. Consider this real example from a Planned Parenthood-led comprehensive sex education class in Utah:
A 12-year-old girl asked a straightforward question: “If a woman has sex with another woman, can she get pregnant?” Instead of providing a simple biological explanation, the instructor launched into an ideologically driven response about gender identity, stating that pregnancy is not about being male or female, but about whether one has a uterus or a penis. The child likely left the class more confused than when she entered.
Beyond gender ideology, Planned Parenthood also normalizes risky sexual behaviors. In one of their classes, students were instructed to sort sexual activities into categories of risk. While most students initially placed behaviors like oral sex and one-night stands under “High Risk,” the instructor proceeded to move them into “Low to No Risk” or “Some Risk” categories—giving teens the dangerous message that these behaviors are safe as long as they use protection. This downplays the emotional, physical, and relational consequences of premature sexual activity.
Planned Parenthood also uses these classes as a marketing tool for their services. Over six weeks, students were encouraged to visit Planned Parenthood for STI testing, contraception, and even help with abusive relationships. On the final day, when an attendee asked what services they provide, the instructor falsely claimed that Planned Parenthood offers prenatal care—despite their own annual reports showing no such services. What they do offer, of course, is abortion.
Planned Parenthood: Grooming Children for Profit
Planned Parenthood’s involvement in teaching sex education in public schools raises serious concerns, as it allows them to groom students through a position of trust. By offering educational programs, they gain access to young minds, creating a pipeline that leads straight to their business—profiting from the very children they’ve influenced.
Instead of focusing on genuine education, their goal is often to foster dependence on their services, including abortion and other reproductive procedures. These organizations should not be entrusted with teaching vulnerable children, especially when their business model relies on grooming those same children into future clients.
HB 233: Protecting Utah Students from Abortion Advocacy
HB 233 is a necessary step to ensure that organizations with a financial interest in abortion are not influencing Utah’s students. Using an elective abortion provider as a teacher or using their materials as resources is advocacy for abortion! Schools should be a place for learning, not an avenue for abortion providers to normalize sexual activity and drive business to their clinics.
Planned Parenthood’s involvement in sex education is not about public health—it’s about creating lifelong clients. By presenting sexual activity as risk-free and by directing students to their clinics, they are actively cultivating future customers. This is a conflict of interest that has no place in Utah classrooms.
